SKETCHING FOR DESIGNERS

I really don’t know what I’m doing while sketching and it frustrates me. That frustration gives me the feeling of not being able to design and is holding me back from a lot of things I want to do.

Before I started taking ACX classes, I suffered a lot from not being able to express my thoughts in any way. I can truly say, that the professors at ArtCenter changed my life to the better. With new skills I live a more meaningful and happier life.

My biggest issue with drawing is, that when I sketch something comes out of it, but it’s usually not exactly what I intended to do. When I pick up the pen and create with it, I never know what will come out of it. I have no technique, no drawing style, no experience. The sketch might be understood, however I might have wanted to draw a different angle, face expression, sometimes even a completely different composition and simply wasn’t able to do so. Although being flexible in the outcome isn’t a bad thing, I don’t feel satisfied when my intentions aren’t met. Purposeful drawing so to say.

Creating for a purpose is the main part about design, I think. Otherwise it is called art, where the work in itself is the purpose. As a designer I want to communicate a certain message that isn’t free from its‘ form and style. A face expression, the type of pencil, the shape, the setting, the coloring, … all of it has to be chosen purposefully. And if I cannot control all these elements, I might as well not be a designer.
